It one of several now in a San Francisco collection. This mortar was NOT used for food preparation, but rather the small hole and original provenance of the finds strongly indicates it was used in perhaps ceremonial rituals, usually by a Chumash shaman! The mortar has bottom abrasion scratches no doubt from soil while the top has dings and nicks from repeated use with the pestle. Minor scrapes are visible along outer perimeter of this superb, ritualistic mortar. The pestle is a hard, dark-colored stone. The Chumash were an ocean-going people, expert in canoeing along the coastline and to the inner Channel Islands. They harvested much of their food from the sea and had villages all along the promontories of southern California. They also had this thing about caves and painting the most bizarre, strange and in some cases, unsettling images along the inner walls of these hill caves. The going theory is that shamans would trek up to these caves, imbibe in some form of mind altering hallucinogenic to commune with the spirit world, perhaps for visions, perhaps for prophecy. And then, apparently, some would paint these visions along the cave walls. After decades, scholars are still attempting to understand what these images mean. But this mortar and pestle came from such a cave when the owner cleaned it out for other purposes! This site is currently negotiating with a San Francisco collector to access more from this general Painted Cave area. Condition: Abrasion scratches, dings, nicks., Material: Stone, Original/Reproduction: Original, Maker: Prehistoric indigenous people of California, Color: Brown
